Great Room Design: Balancing Modern with Maximalist Elements

Great Room Design: Balancing Modern with Maximalist Elements

When the newly renovated contemporary kitchen wasn’t blending with the existing great room, my clients knew it was time for a redesign.

The goal of this Hawthorn Woods remodel was to create a fluid transition from one room to another. To do this, we created a cohesive color palette and found similar finishes that tie the spaces together.

The client wanted a space that they could comfortably entertain their family and friends in. We chose a large sectional to anchor the space complete with a durable fabric to accommodate gatherings in the years to come.

The fireplace was transformed into the statement piece of this great room design.

At first, the client wanted to keep their existing fireplace but after reviewing a potential design created by Redux, they were sold on a new look. We used porcelain slabs separated by decorative metal strips for the ultimate contemporary look.

Now, for a real showstopper…

Instead of one classic pendant, we chose to incorporate 2 stylized pendant lights at different heights to add interest in our layered lighting plan.

Custom built-in cabinetry added storage while allowing the homeowner to proudly showcase some prized possessions.

Lastly, we added custom drapery to the two-story-high windows. The drapery perfectly frames the lake view in the client’s backyard.
